Theory of Knowledge

Day 1: Students arrive in the spectacular Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh, Ladakh. We will travel to our orientation site in Phyang, a short half hour away by taxi. Here, we begin to acclimatise, get to know each other, and our new surroundings.

Days 2 -3: Exploring Identity: Through a series of activities and experiences, students will begin examining the concept of “identity”. What part do our identities play when we interact with knowledge? We’ll interact with students from a local school and investigate how different identities and values shape the way we look at the world.

Days 4 - 7: As a newly formed group, we will head out to the village of Gya for our homestays. Here we will get to know our hosts and gain insight into a different way of living. We will explore the Optional Themes Knowledge and Religion and Knowledge and Technology.

Days 8 - 10: After thanking our hosts and armed with new knowledge, we’ll travel to Changthang, an entirely different culture and way of being. Here we will have the opportunity to learn about the nomadic way of life and the invaluable knowledge the people have about their environment and the land they live on. We will dive head first into learning about the Changthangi, the goats from which Pashmina is harvested, and the year round processes and systems that go into producing the wool that is used to weave the finest garments. Here we will explore the Optional Themes Knowledge and Indigenous Societies and Knowledge and Language.

Days 11 - 12: We’ll travel back to Leh to explore the Optional Theme Knowledge and Politics. Leh is a hub for politics, the arts, and tourism. Students will explore the capital, visiting the fascinating Old Town, witnessing the juxtaposition of the ancient with the modern and speaking with a variety of people who work in the fields of politics, tourism, archeology, restoration, music and more.

Days 13 - 15: On the final days of our time together, students will participate in a mini TOK exhibition and in focus groups to explore the TOK essay. The group will spend time reflecting on the experiences they have had the past couple of weeks and celebrate all they have learned.
